Great Blue Heron

Today at the Shediac River, we saw Great Blue Herons.

Not just one or two,

but bunches of a half dozen at a time

sitting in these distant tree tops

and then flying off to the south into deeper woods.

We wondered if there might be a rookery
just behind the tree tops.

The Great Blue herons were beautiful to watch.

They have long curving necks, blue-grey wings.
In flight their legs trail behind their bodies
and they fly with slow and steady wingbeats
and almost seem to float.

Watching these graceful birds was a memorable experience.

Carol these are amazing photographs.. Only once did I see a Heron in a tree, she was nestled half way up into some branches, nesting I believe... Never have I seen Herons on the tree tops ... Wow.. Thanks for showing this..

Thanks Gwen. This was a first for us. We've not seen Great Blue Herons standing at the tops of evergreens before. And there were many of them. It was an amazing sight.

Enjoying your latest blogs. I loved the photo of the herons in the tree tops. They nest on a little island somewhere in the Shediac region-a bit north I think. So they are likely out scavenging for food or getting away from the demanding little ones.

Quite funny to see them in the trees, but if one can fly, why not.

there's something comical about herons standing on the very tops of trees! Lovely photos!

Thanks for your comments. It is funny to see such a large bird standing and balancing so gracefully on a tree top.

I have been told that the Great Blue Herons nest nearby on Cocagne Island and on Shediac Island.
