Metamorphosis

Metamorphosis

Mists at dawn
and chills of evening
carry scents of hydrangea,
the last of my roses.
Winds rattle dry leaves.
Blue Jays call
my changes.

Mama Zen at Imaginary Garden with Real Toads found at http://withrealtoads.blogspot.ca  challenged poets to create a poem using their own power image in 25 words or fewer.  A power image is one which turns up frequently in your work, one you return to often.  Mine is metamorphosis, often linked to changes in the natural world.  And often in my work, changes inside mirror changes outside and visa versa.

I like this. Your words carry the early whispers of autumn into your garden. The theme of metamorphosis is one of my favorites.

Thanks for your comment. It seems too early for the whispers of autumn but here they are regardless.

Ah, yes, fall is almost here, and I will welcome it after the drought. Carol, your images are indeed powerful. This feels like a portrait of autumn to come, and I feel the change in your words. Nicely done! Thx for visiting my blog. I'm going on vacation for a week, but perhaps you would like this one. Amy

You do a lot with these few words to create a visual sequence that works down naturally to your strong ending. The entire piece projects a closeness and connection to the natural order of things, which calls constantly for change.Enjoyed it much.

Indeed, too early for autumn; but I feel autumn in the air. Enjoyed the images in your poem.

Very lovely....and it appears to be fall here - very suddenly - as well.

Metamorphosis in every aspect of life is good ... positive. I enjoyed your poem and your perspective.

Hi. The call of the blue jay is distictive and I hear it in those last two words 'my changes' and the hard clanging sound of the word 'changes'. Nice poem!! Sad about the passing of summer, but I love the autumn. Jane

Thank you Sharp Little Pencil for your comment and for the extra link to another of your poems. I'm glad you can feel the autumn in my poem.

Thanks Hedgewitch for your comment and for explaining why what I wrote works. I find it so helpful.

Thank you Mary and Sherry Blue Sky for your comments. It does feel like autumn is just around a corner.

Hi Helen,
Metamorphosis is all life really ever is, if lived honestly and well. Thanks for your comment.

Hi Jane,
Thanks for the comment and especially for pointing out what works and how. That is helpful to me. I love the autumn too; perhaps we'll get more rain. The earth here is dry, too dry.

The idea of metamorphosis must always play a strong part in poetry. I like the idea you have expressed in the limited number of words.

Carol Steel said...

Hi Kerry,
Thanks for your comment. Poetry is always about metamorphosis because it is always holding up a different perspective of what we think we see, know and experience.

I love how you make nature personal and not just the glib, you know, metamorphosis is one of the divine mysteries. No. It is specific, in front of you and inside of you, blue Jay calling the changes like a sports announcer as the seasons of the year and the seasons of life cycle move forward. I love being in the autumn of my life with roses, Hydrangeas, not quite dry leaves, mists, chills, day and night.

Hello Susan,

Thank you for your lovely comment on the season, both the interior and exterior changes. I appreciate it so much.

the scents, the chill, the last of the roses... nice progression of a life of a flower - and yes, our lives as well. The photos are stunning!

Hi Margaret,
Thanks for your feedback and for visiting my blog.

beautiful photos and words, I like the idea of a power image.

Carol Steel said...

Thanks CGP. The power image idea is an excellent focus for my own writing. It is easy to lose sight of what I constantly repeat.
