The Trap
I am down again.
Crack of the chain pulled taut,
spray of grittle, as gravity weighs
down again.
Pain triggers
humility.
I don’t relish having to learn
and relearn the lesson.
“Loosen the chain,
before you step out
or
it will rip you, trip you,
trip you…
again and again.”
I flick aside the gravel
that claims my knees,
now planted in tailings.
My skin swells
around the wounds,
and I hear again,
“Loosen the chain
before you step out,
step out,
step,
out.”

Really good Carol. Terrifically emotive. Those chains...very few people spun those chains into a light-hearted poem. Well done to use grittle; I couldn’t do it. :)
As I read and reread this, I thought of certain memories that become traps, how they crack the present moment and drag one down and down again. Tightly written and very evocative. Have had a few similar moments.

I enjoyed your poem very much. The photo certainly enhanced it. Thank you for visiting and reading my poem, Carol, and I look forward to reading more of your work.
Nicely penned, Carol. Your interpretation of the words feels unique to me. This is a strong write, and I love the image that you selected to head it.
Thanks Veronica. We spend our lives in many self-imposed chains and don't realize that we imagine our own limits. And then move in and stay there. Thanks for your comment.
Thank you Elizabeth. I appreciate your comment. All sorts of situations in life become traps, if we don't bring them to awareness and deal with them. Part of being human, I have learned.
Dear miskmask,
Thank you for your comment on my poem and the photo I found on Google images. I enjoyed your poem as well.
Thank you Brenda W for your comment on my interpretation and my write. I appreciate both very much.
This is intense writing..how many times we know something 'loosen the chain' but don't do it and thus pay the consequences!
Hi Mary,

Carol-Sorry I missed your wordle last week! I see you you did not let the grittle get you down!
